Experiential learning key component of Krannert education

Flipping the classroom, integrating work practices into the lecture hall, emerging students into field work are just a few of the new approaches being taken in business education.  While graduates of the Krannert School of Management are known for their strong analytical insight and global leadership skills, an additional hallmark of their education is honing these abilities through experiential learning opportunities available at Krannert.

One such example is our Experiential Learning Initiative. ELI, as it is known, forms teams of engineering, science, technology and Krannert students, which then take on interdisciplinary, semester-long consulting projects. ELI gets rave reviews from both corporate clients, who discover fresh ways to solve problems, and students, who gain real-world experience and valuable business connections.

The annual $100,000 Burton D. Morgan Business Plan Competition is another exceptional opportunity for Purdue and Krannert students. The 2013 competition was held Feb. 19, and three Krannert graduate students – Satish Kunchakuri, Nimish Dharawat and Subhash Ghosh – were among the winners.

Other experiential learning competitions allow students to see different countries and gain cultural intelligence. For example, four undergraduate Krannert students – Andrew Walters, Pablo Puente, Marcus Glick and Brendan Bonner – are currently in Germany competing in the Rubicon International Contest for Business Students. Krannert students placed first in this global competition in 2011. (Update: Krannert students won the 2013 competition as well on Feb. 28.)

Participating in another international competition, three Krannert MBA students – Eric Fredrickson, Egemen Gozoglu and Katharina Gishewski –  will be traveling to Denmark in March for the Grundfos Challenge . After advancing from the first-ever U.S. competition held in Kansas, they will compete against winning teams from other regional competitions held in Denmark and China.

Whether international or national in scope, our students stretch themselves by competing against the brightest and best students from top-ranked schools, and I am pleased, but not surprised, when they come out on top. Just last month, four Krannert undergraduate students  –  Frank Pace , Spencer Slaton, Elayna Dorsey and Marissa Lyles – won the Midwest Diversity Case Competition , competing against business school students from Notre Dame, Washington University, the University of Chicago, Indiana University and 10 other top programs.

These are just some of the most recent examples of how Krannert students take their analytical insight and apply it outside of the classroom with great success. Students have many other experiential learning opportunities at Krannert through student clubs, study abroad experiences, internships and co-op employment.  We are proud of our students’ accomplishments, but we are just as proud of the fact we offer such a breadth and depth of experiential learning opportunities to prepare Krannert students as they become the next generation of global business leaders.
